50 new slang words for Monday at The Online Slang Dictionary

Monday's update - direct from the submission queue - is available here.

Also, in case you missed the last update, The Online Slang Dictionary now features SlangMaps - maps of the world showing where each slang term is used. Stay tuned for a way to put yourself on the map.

(If the maps weren't appearing for you, try again now. I fixed a bug that affected Internet Explorer version 7.)

Announcing SlangMaps on The Online Slang Dictionary

Slang use varies by country and even by areas within a country. Who uses what slang? Before, you'd have to read linguistic journals. Not any longer.

The Online Slang Dictionary now features SlangMaps: interactive maps that show you where slang terms are used.

Visit The Online Slang Dictionary at http://onlineslangdictionary.com/ to click, drag, zoom in, and find out whether it's okay to say "hella" in New York or "y'all" in California.

Let me know what you think.

P.S. The maps were created with submissions I've already received. Soon you'll be able to put yourself on the map. Stay tuned.

50 more slang words at The Online Slang Dictionary

Today's update, comprising 50 new slang words, is available here.

As I mentioned in the last update, I've been doing a bunch of little improvements to make the dictionary easier to use. I listed several of them then, but noted that I had more to share. Here's the rest of the list:

  • I've been adding words directly from the submission queue. Look for the "Featured Word" star image which indicates entries that have been edited for correctness, completeness, and that have been placed in the thesaurus.
  • I've reorganized the navigation tabs so navigation is now much easier.
  • There's a new, handy "Word List" navigation tab so you can view a list of all slang words in the dictionary.

And there's something really exciting in store for the dictionary in the next few days. Stay tuned!

150 more slang words at The Online Slang Dictionary

It's been about a week since my last update, so that means one thing: more slang. I've posted 3 more updates:

Combined, that's about 150 brand new terms.

Also, something I haven't mentioned yet is the many small improvements I've been making to the dictionary to make things easier to find.

  • The front page has been completely redesigned to make it easier to figure out where to go. Look for "Recent", "Find", "Explore" or "Subscribe".
  • All of the slang words now have links so that you can "E-mail to a friend" or "E-mail a correction/addition to the editor."
  • There are now more ways to navigate the thesaurus. You can view a flat table of contents, a fully expanded table of contents, or an alphabetical index. Of course, you can always use site search to find the category you're looking for.
  • Long browse-by-letter pages are now split into multiple pages so that they load more quickly. This is especially important because I've been adding so many slang words recently.

I'll mention some of the other improvements in the next update.

Have a suggestion for a new feature? Does something on the site not work quite how you expect it to? Feel free to drop me an e-mail.

Enjoy!

3 slang updates at The Online Slang Dictionary

As I mentioned in my last update, I'm putting slang submissions from the submission queue online, in their original (unedited) form. This way more slang gets on the site more quickly.

Since that June 5th announcement, I've put plenty of new words online. I've got 3 updates waiting for you:

I've also been doing some behind-the-scenes work to make the dictionary easier to browse. I'll mention some of that work in my next update. I hope you enjoy the new slang.

46 new slang words today

Since I started The Online Slang dictionary over 10 years ago, I've always hand-edited each slang submission for spelling, grammar, accuracy, etc. But slang evolves quickly. Too quickly, in fact, for me to keep up with all of the great submissions and still hand-edit each entry.

So I've decided to put the entries in the submission queue online, in their original form. I'll be posting 50 or so submissions from the queue every couple of days. The first batch is available here.

Enjoy!
